Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10
I have been waiting for this since over a month now. First, the live CD installer freezes during the partitioning step. Then I download the alternate text install CD and write it to a CD RW. Bad luck, the CD RW doesn’t work anymore. So I wash myself, dress and run up to the nearby store to get some blank CDs. Come back, write, install, configure.
The current problems I’m facing :-
1) Though I have disable powernowd (as suggested by someone on IBF), I’m still experiencing hangings, though they aren’t random anymore. This makes my belief stronger that all this is just a lack of RAM.
2) Can’t run CompizFusion. This is disappointing as I have installed the ATI proprietary drivers, and after doing that Beryl ran smoothly on PCLOS.
3) The overall system is slower as compared to PCLOS, but select apps such as Opera and Synaptic seem to be twice as faster.
4) The default apps included are not very helpful. I have been compelled to install at least 3 KDE apps till now.
5) I am getting pathetic speeds on even the best repository servers!
All these are making me reconsider my decision of switching over to Ubuntu. In any case, I do have a backup of my PCLOS /home partition.

1. How much RAM do you have on the system? Even I’ve noticed, because I’ve installed it on quite a few systems that anything less than 384 MB and Ubuntu starts spluttering.
2. Use the main server for software sources; by default, when you choose time zone as India, it selects the India server. Even I used to get pathetic speeds. Switched to US servers, same problem. Main is still fine, although at time, the speed I get is in BYTES per second!
3. I concur about the default apps. Kubuntu is much better in this regard, BTW. Maybe you should try THAT out, although it won’t be smooth without 512 MB of RAM (personal experience, with desktop effects enabled).

RAM upgrade IS the only thing that can solve your problem. However I still dont see any reason why you’re getting slow speeds
