Rescue Dawn

Rescue Dawn is one of the few movies that I watched this year and liked. Even though it was released in 2006, I got a chance to see this much-spoken about movie only yesterday. It has been surrounded by controversies and accusations, but it still comes across as a work of untainted craftsmanship.

Rescue Dawn is the story of a US Navy Pilot, Dieter Dengler, and is set in the backdrop of the Vietnam War. Dieter is sent along with three other pilots to Vietnam on a mission, during which Dieter’s jet was shot down. He was captured and prisoned by Vietnamese villagers, and was kept detained is the most inhuman conditions, which have been graphically portrayed very beautifully in the movie. Dieter, along with 5 of his inmates, plans an escape from this prison, and succeeds, only to realize that ‘the jungle in the area is the real prison’. He escapes into the jungle, with Duane, one of his inmates, who is killed by some villagers. Dieter manages to escape, and is finally rescued by a US helicopter.

The thing that binds you to the movie is the amazing cinematography. Both the lead actors, Christian Bale and Steve Zahn, have done a marvelous job. Overall, it’s a movie worth watching and is entertaining too. But I won’t recommend it to kids and people who are weak at heart, because the movie contains some scenes of intense war violence and torture.
