To keep it easy to understand and readable, I have decided to keep my privacy policy in a Q&A form.

• Why do you want to know my name and e-mail address?

Whenever you leave a comment, I need to verify your identity to separate you from junk commenters, also known as ’spammers’. I do this by asking for your name and email address.



• What other information do you keep track of, about me?

I use a plug-in for Wordpress called Wordpress.com Stats. Apart from this, I also use Google Analytics. These two services are similar, and collect information about visitors including, but not limited to, their IP address, web browser, operating system, means of arrival (search engines, through referring links or by directly typing in a URL), physical location, the time spent on the site, number and links of pages visited.

Also, cookies are stored on your computer when you visit RutSum, which are used to remember your preferences and information (name, e-mail address, and website, if mentioned) so that you don’t have to re-enter the information every time you visit. If you don’t want this, you can disable cookies by changing your web browser preferences.



• How do you use this information?

For statistical purposes, administration and maintenance. For example, if I see that I am getting a lot of visits from a particular region, I would try to make my content more appealing to the users of that region. If I notice a sudden rise in traffic, I would want to upgrade my server resources to be able to handle the additional load. I also like to smile and feel happy when I see that people visit RutSum, like my content and read it.



• Do you share or sell my information to other companies?

No. The information I mentioned above is not shared or sold to any other companies. However, I have third-party advertising, who track your web usage through web beacons/cookies.



• How can I stop receiving e-mail from you?

If you have been receiving comment updates or new articles in your inbox, you can simply click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the e-mail. I do not send out any unwanted or unsolicited e-mail to my readers.



• I see third-party advertising on RutSum. Do these third-parties also keep track of my information?

Yes. I run Google AdSense ads on RutSum. Google uses cookies to track the websites you visit. By compiling information on which kind of content you visit, Google is able to display ads to you which are better suited to your interests. This ‘interest-based’ tracking is done using the DoubleClick DART cookie. If you do not want Google to track your web usage, you can opt out of the use of the DART cookie by visiting the Google ad and content network privacy policy. Please do note that the cookies DO NOT track your name, address, email address, or telephone number.



• Who can I talk to if I have a question about my privacy?
