My Custom Widgets Upgrade FAIL

I’ve been using a plugin for WordPress called My Custom Widgets. I recently upgraded it to version 1.9.

The beauty of this plugin is that it allows you to put in your own customised HTML or PHP code, and allows you to selectively display it on various categories of your WordPress blog such as site-wide, archives, category page, home page, a particular post page, a search page or a tag page. It can also copy from an existing widget and display it selectively.

I use this widget to display links to other websites in my right sidebar. I used the automatic upgrade feature in WP 2.7 to upgrade to the latest version when an upgrade was available for the plugin.

Sadly, after the upgrade, the custom widget I created was gone. It took me a lot of pain – restoring from backups, removing the plugin from the server, manually reinstalling and recreating the widget, to finally solve the problem.

Note to self from this experience : Always take a backup before making any changes to the WP backend, even if its as small as upgrading a plugin. The plugin now works fine.
