Khuda Kay Liye

This post was guest blogged by Himani Khatreja.

“Khuda Kay Liye” is the first Pakistani movie that was released in India. I was initially apprehensive as the promos didn’t look interesting enough, and this is why I delayed watching it. But once I did, I realised the immense potential which the film held. The movie is backed by a strong script, powerful performances and realistic situations. Another thing which struck me as amazing was the manner in which it could hold my attention for such a long span.

The film basically tries to clarify that all Muslims are not terrorists; a notion which is believed to be true owing to the string of terror attacks that have taken place around the world since the 9/11 episode, which is the setting for this movie. It also shows us how religion and culture are generally assumed to be the same thing. ‘Islam’ as a religion is seen to be extremely conservative, regressive, and misogynistic. This too is ridiculed and shown to be the result of some false institutions and fraud ‘Maulvis’ who read Islam to be a supporter of violence and terrorism. These organisations then brainwash the minds of innocent people making them believe that killing is what their religion demands and it needs to be done ‘In The Name Of God’.

The movie also goes on to clear several myths that have cluttered the minds of not only others but even Muslims about the sayings of the ‘Quran’.

All in all Shoaib Mansoor has created an outstanding movie, one which people everywhere can identify with, because either they’re facing it or they are the ones forcing it.
