Frequently Asked Questions About Top Engineering Colleges

A senior at BITS, Pilani, with the alias messyangel, was kind enough to visit RutSum and share his expertise with us in the form of a long comment on our earlier BITSAT 2008 Cutoff / Predicted Rank post. Though the knowledge shared by him is priceless, I feel that something needs to be added to it, and it needs to be properly formed so that it is clearly visible, readable and easily reachable and referable. So I am making a new post for this and adding my own experience to it.

NITs vs. BITS Hyderabad
BITS Hyderabad has been setup recently. Because of this reason, even though it is a part of the very popular and recognised BITS, Pilani, companies do not prefer do recruit preofessionals from this institute. Rather they would prefer to get engineers from the old, reecognised and well-established NITs. Moreover, recommendation letters from NIT professors hold a lot of value, for the same reason that NITs are well known and old. Moreover, good IT companies rarely come to Hyderabad for campus lift-offs.

Akshay, who also claims to be a senior at BITS, Pilani says that BITS, Hyderabad hasn’t even passed out its first batch as yet, and so talking about the preference of companies is meaningless.

B. Tech./B.E. vs M. Sc. (Hons) or M.Sc. (Tech)
Streams are of course different, but the general trend has been that both B.E. graduates and M. Sc. postgraduates land in similar jobs, but the latter (i.e. M. Sc.) are paid lower because their graduation is of 3 years (10+2+3) and 2 years of post-graduate while B.E. have 4 years of engineering (10+2+4). The industry prefers to take 4 year graduates rather than 3 year graduates. Companies like TCS and Infosys train both B.E./B.Tech. guys and M.Sc./M.Tech. guys for the same job, but just because the value of an engineering degree is more than a science degree, the engineer is paid more to do the exactly same job.

Will I get a M.Sc. Dual Degree in BITS?

messyangel, on the other hand, says that at BITS, only the top 10% of the students selected in the M.Sc. (Hons) course are offered the Dual Degree, and not everybody is eligible for it. The exact criteria is if you get a certain GPA (8.5 or above) in the first year, then only can you get a dual degree. Otherwise, if your GPA is lower than 8.5, you just get plain M.Sc (Hons) and not a dual degree. This means that you cannot get a dual degree just by your BITSAT scores, and that M. Sc. (Tech) students CANNOT get a dual degree at BITS at all. Dual degrees are only for M.Sc. (Hons) students, and that too the toppers out of them. messyangel, to prove that his point is correct, provides us with a link from the OFFICIAL BITS WEBSITE. I personally believe what he is saying is true, because the link seems to be authentic. It seems that EVERY M.Sc. (Hons) student is eligible to get a B.E. dual at BITS, it is just the branch that you get is allotted according to your CGPA at the end of the first year.

Akshay claims that 99% of the M.Sc. (Hons) students get dual degrees, and there is no such criterion to be eligible for it, as mentioned by messyangel.

Rasagy Sharma, another supposed senior at BITS, says that after you pass out with a DUAL Degree, you get TWO degrees: MSc (Hons) & BE (Hons). That means you are an ENGINEER along with a SCIENCE Degree. Every M.Sc. student CAN get a dual, the CAN means because it is your own choice, and a few kids (3-4) choose not to do a dual degree. Now to get a dual, your FIRST YEAR CG is used. From the last couple of years, the trend has been that with a CGPA OF 7.5 (& above), you will be allotted a BE Computer Science Engineering. Then comes EEE, EnI, Mech, Chemical. (In Pilani, there’s Civil & B.Pharma too, though I don’t think many get B. Pharma).

Can I be transferred from BITS, Hyderabad or Goa to BITS, Pilani?
Sachin says that he has talked to seniors at BITS and a transfer is possible if you score very high at your branch.

messyangel claims that such a transfer is not possible and such queries are never entertained.

This post will be updated frequently as and when needed.

  1. I did badly in AIEEE.But, I still might manage to get into one of the lesser known private colleges in West Bengal. However, I did very well in my Boards, and am sure to get into one of the good colleges for B.Sc. What do you suggest I should do? Considering long term prospects, jobs etc?

  2. 1. Companies “DO NOT” prefer BITS Pilani Hyderabad? What does that mean? Even the first batch hasn’t started from BITS-Hyd!

    2. What makes you give this analysis? Are you sitting in the minds of those recruiters?

    3. Look at Goa Campus. Their first placements were very good (50+) companies visited them within its first year:
    Here: http://www.goiit.com/posts/list/counselling-ongoing-placements-at-bits-goa-campus-your-comments-40134.htm

    4. Also, BITS-Pilani, Goa Campus did amazingly well (Better than ALL the NITs) in terms of MS where recommendations count. Have a look here:
    http://bits360.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1225

There is NO reason to believe, BITS Pilani, Hyderabad campus wouldn’t do as good too.

    5. MSc at BITS is an intergrated course of 4 years and not 3 years. The first two years of course syllabus is exactly same as BE syllabus.

    6. Duals are given to 99% of MSc students. Check out the BITS brochure if you don’t believe me. EVERYONE is eligible for Duals.

I hope you’d correct the mistakes you have made on your blog, to respect the sanctity of reporting and informing future generations of students.

  3. I ve talked to the seniors….even M.Sc.(tech) people or BE lower branch people can be shifted to higher branches…..but they need to score very well like 95-96%

  8. A NOTE FOR ALL READERS:
Please do not take only one student’s advice to be the final verdict on a campus. Ask others, and confirm with FACTS & FIGURES. There’s a difference between PERSONAL VIEWS & ACTUAL FACTS

PS: For facts about BITS, please refer to the BITS Website.

    Here’s what I’ve to say:

    NITs vs BPHC:
First I’m guessing you dont know what BPHC is. BPHC is BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus.

Second, BPHC has been STARTED this year. This means that the students joining it form the FIRST BATCH. So the ones doing BE will pass out AFTER 4 years. THEN companies will come for placements. So FIRST Batch of BPHC gets placed in 2012.

Thirdly, please quote people correctly. As Akshay said in the comment, THE FIRST BATCH HAS NOT STARTED. Read the Second point I wrote. And incase you decide to quote me, please do it properly ;)

    B.Tech/BE vs MSc:
Please post such views with proper facts & figures. After you pass out with a DUAL Degree, you get TWO degrees: MSc (Hons) & BE (Hons). That means you are an ENGINEER along with a SCIENCE Degree. Ever wondered why they called it DUAL DEGREE??

    Getting Duals:
Since you can’t quote properly, (Or maybe you got confused with the way information is put up on the site), I’ll simplify it. EVERY MSc STUDENT CAN TAKE A DUAL. I said CAN because some students DECIDE NOT TO TAKE A DUAL (Very very few, around 3-4).

Pharma).

    Tranfer of Campus:
I agree with Sachin. Tranfer from one campus to another can happen either in the start of the 1st Sem OR BEFORE the start of 2nd Sem.

When you join a campus, you are given an option to decide if you would like to be considered for inter-campus upgradation. (You do know the concept of Upgradation & Iterations right?)

After the first sem, you can also fill a form if you want to go to another campus. BUT it is pretty hard to be transferred in this case. I don’t know the criteria, so won’t comment.

    —————

I’m leaving this comment only because last year, a similar thing misled me. I would strongly suggest you to ensure that info on your blog is correct. Posting such info will only bring down the reputation of your well-built blog (Oh & the other posts are pretty good though!)

  9. PS: No need to approve this comment.

I would request you to please ask messyangel to give proof of the fact that he’s a BITSian. And if you are writing posts on topics that might just change someone else’s future, please be sure you get the right person’s opinion.

Incase you want any clarification, feel free to mail me. And take these comments in the right spirit. We just want to make sure students like you & your mates can take proper decisions for their future

I want no clarification. I am including opinions of all commenters here. However, if you include links from authentic sources, it increases the reliability of your info.

And yes, the website mentions that only M.Sc. (Hons) students can get duals, M.Sc. (Tech) students cannot.

  12. Correction: When I mentioned MSc above, I meant MSc (Hons) & NOT MSc (Tech). My Bad! :D

Yes, the site mentions that only MSc. (Hons) students can get duals. This is because of the following order of preference that has been decided:
    MSc (Hons)>BE>MSc (Tech)

The concept of MSc (Tech) students getting duals is currently being implemented. The reason it was not there was due to less no. of students opting for duals (Placements of MSc (Tech) are similar to BE CS) and due to something related to the course duration extending alot.

Since I’m not in MSc (Tech), I don’t have exact details. So I would suggest you not to consider my word as final in this regard.

It’s good that you realized that links are necessary for authentic info. Being a BITSian, I got most of the above info by talking with profs & seniors in my college. You can always go ahead and discuss it in BITS360, where there are a lot of posts giving info with proper facts.

PS: When I first read your post, I got the impression that most of it was YOUR comments. Please make sure the readers can make out the difference between what are your views, what is authentic & what has been quoted from others :)

  13. this too good informatiom.
