That way you remain tagged for those who want to know who you are in the photo, but you won't get notifications for it. I think that if Facebook offered more granular controls - say an unsubscribe link for that particular conversation thread - then it would be better. By and large I want to receive updates, but if a thread becomes annoying I want the ability to unsubscribe from that thread. Of course, you can turn off notifications completely per feature too.
