Chinese Mobiles Flood Indian Cellular Market

This post was guest blogged by Sneezy Melon of The Goofy Express.

It’s a long known fact that owning a branded cell phone has been a trend in only a few countries besides India, one often related with social stigmas. However, the recent flood of Chinese mobile phones in the Indian cellular market seems all set to bring drastic changes.

Recently, a friend of mine was gifted a ‘Made In China’ mobile phone having all the features that one could possibly expect, including a touchscreen module controlled by a stylus, multiple SIM card slots, 5-speaker High Definition Sound System, 3.2 Mega Pixel Autofocus Camera, a 2GB MicroSD memory card with expandable memory upto 8GB and a large 2.8 inch screen size along with an unusually long-lasting battery. The more surprising part is that, although something similar could be bought from a trusted brand like Nokia costing around $900 (Rs.36,000), the Chinese counterpart costed a meager $200 (Rs 8,000).

The Chinese models would, of course, lack on the warranty and customer support part. But, availability of such “expensive” features at such low costs has certainly caught the focus of the industry and the customers. Maybe introduction of the ‘use-and-throw’ concept in the cell phone industry isn’t too far away. Whatever the long-term results may be, cell phone prices in India are definitely expected to fall, yet again.
